Considered a milestone for the sector, Geo Elétrica Tamboara, located in Tamboara (PR), was the first large-scale commercial plant in Brazil to produce biogas from filter cake, vinasse and straw. Its capacity expansion was recently completed, with a total investment of R$45 million.
With an installed capacity of 10 MW of electricity, the plant underwent expansion to produce 31,000 Nm³/day of biomethane, equivalent to replacing up to 38,000 liters of diesel. The biomethane is sold in the form of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) to industries in the Londrina region (PR). The unit operates using sugarcane residues and other agro-industrial waste, with two vertical biodigesters of 5,000 m³ and two horizontal biodigesters of 18,000 m³.
Furthermore, in 2024, the Tamboara unit inaugurated an innovative pilot plant designed to expand the biogas chain, through an advanced biomass pre-treatment process, representing an important advance for the industry.
